I almost certainly don’t charge as much as your plumber but more than the pizza delivery courier (who should no doubt earn more).
Like most editors, I charge by the hour. If your text is a longer fiction text, I will negotiate a staggered rate that is realistic for you while doing justice to the work involved. Manuscript assessments are a special case: for these I charge a fee that varies depending on the length of the manuscript.

I will consult with you to estimate what the task will entail and how long it will take. I will ask you for the manuscript so that I can do a sample edit. This helps me to calculate a realistic estimate. You don’t want any unwelcome surprises as the project develops.
These days the rate for a professional editor is anything between AUD 80 and AUD 160 per hour. See information on editing rates published by the Institute of Professional Editors (IPEd). My rate will vary depending on the type of project.
You will find editors charging lower rates than this. Some have a supplementary source of income. Some lack qualifications and experience. As a member of the Institute of Professional Editors (IPEd) and Accredited Editor, I strive to uphold the highest standards.
My professional ethics prohibit me from undercutting other editors and putting downward pressure on our hourly rate – for the sake of all freelance editors.
